Lord Mayor Celebrates Greek Melbourne at the Antipodes Festival
The Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Nicholas Reece, attended the 38th Antipodes Festival on Lonsdale Street with friends and family, joining thousands of visitors across the weekend celebration.
During his visit, he met with community representatives, engaged with stallholders and performers, and experienced the vibrant atmosphere of Melbourne’s historic Greek precinct. He also attended with his family, reflecting the strong connection many Melburnians share with the city’s Greek community.
The Lord Mayor reaffirmed the City of Melbourne’s strong support for the festival and its role in celebrating the city’s multicultural identity.
“In the City of Melbourne we are very pleased to support it. Our multicultural community is part of what makes Melbourne unique and distinctive, and at the City of Melbourne we are proud sponsors of the Antipodes Festival, and that will always continue,” he said.
Speaking about Melbourne’s Greek community, the Lord Mayor noted the personal connections many families share with Greek culture in the city.
“I know our Greek community is so strong and so proud. We are the biggest Greek city in the world outside of Greece and that is a big source of pride for us as a city. This is a weekend when we celebrate it.”
He added that his own family enjoys close ties with the community, noting that his daughters have learned Greek and play football with Greek friends, while his wife has returned to Greek school to improve her language skills.
His visit highlighted the important role the Antipodes Festival continues to play in celebrating Greek culture and bringing communities together in the heart of Melbourne.
