About Glykeria
Glykeria is Greece’s most important female singer who has carved a significant career in Israel, France, Turkey and England. Her career has spanned over 30 years and is marked by multi gold and platinum releases. Glykeria began in 1974 in the Athens’ Plaka boites where she distinguished herself by adding a unique interpretation to songs by composers like Hadjidakis, Theodorakis and Loizos. Her voice caused a stir in the industry and Glykeria’s first solo album, Ta Smyrneika, traditional songs from Asia Minor in the 1980s was a musical watershed.
Glykeria gained momentum and fans and in 1982 represented Greece in the Europalia '82 festival in Brussels, together with George Dalaras. In 1983 Glykeria released her first live concert Omorfi Nyhta (Beautiful Night) and due to its massive success Lyra released her first live album, I Glykeria Stin Omorfi Nyhta which broke all musical sale records in Greece until that point in time.
The rest is history and Glykeria is now a musical superstar performing across Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus, Israel and Turkey. She is also Israel’s most popular foreign singer; so much so that the Mayor of Jerusalem awarded her the golden key of the city in 1994. She was the only foreign artist to be invited to sing in the special memorial event for Yitzhak Rabin the slain Israeli leader and man of peace. She has released albums in France, Israel, Turkey and in the US. Glykeria has performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the concert’s album was released and, immediately afterwards, Glykeria and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was released throughout the world by Sony Classical.
In 2001 she participated in the album Alif of the world-renown master Turkish musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek. In 2002 she performed with the Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra, the Estudiantina orchestra, and gave a personal tour all over Greece as well.
